Memorial Day Weekend 2010

Memorial Day for the Cable Family means one family split 20 ways for several days in a row, while working mad hours. It's opening weekend at Austin Lake, while Austin is also still in school, and I still have two little ones who aren't quite independent enough to let run loose. (believe it or not, many moms at the lake might cut their kids loose at 3, but it's usually the moms like me who have to watch them, help them, take care of them, and eventually shoo them back to their campsites) Considering the crowd that was here and the weather we had, our weekend was quite peaceful.

On the work side of things, my parents came to their camper for the weekend to free me up to work the gate on Friday. Leila was not fond of this long work-day for me, nor was she fond of her environment--normally quiet and all ours--being inhabited by hundreds and hundreds of people. By Saturday evening, she was doing better because she realized the great people-watching opportunities that were coming her way.

Other than Friday, my work mainly consisted of staying out the way and taking care of my kids so that they could have some fun, too. Leila helped her dad in the ski boat while docked, Gage got to ride along in the ski boat during lessons. Leila played in the creek (all 6 inches from the shore) while Gage ventured on the Saturday night hayride. He easily conned Poppy into taking him wherever he needed to be in the golf cart. Austin spent Sunday morning at home with Leila so I could do some exploring with Gage in the creek. We took Grandma along and waded for quite awhile. He was getting pretty excited to be in deep spots so he sought them out. One deep spot turned into a deep plunge and I had a water rescue on my hands. In a mere second, he was in over his head and talking to me with his big blue eyes-- he stayed calm, but it definitely caught his attention. He probably bobbed two or three times in a matter of seconds and then he decided he'd rather go to the beach "because there are bouys at the beach, mom"

We continued to do our thing for the rest of the weekend even after Gage went home with Poppy and Grandma. While he went to a party and then a parade in McConnelsville, Leila and I mellowed at the playgrounds and survived some thunderstorms. She had her first ride on the big Ford with Austin while he launched boats into the lake, her first sno cone while waiting for a concession stand dinner, and I think everyone was happy to get some rest after day four of it all. Afterall, the summer is just getting started. Our book bags have been turned into Austin Lake bags, our kitchen is covered in sand, many new clothes already have been turned into play clothes, the basement is full of beach towels, and the Polaris definitely needs a new tank of gas. We are blessed. We work hard, but we spend all summer together. It's nice to have a job where the kids can go along. I'm sure my August posts will have a much different tone, but for now... Life is Grand.
