Lately, Gage's school has been sponsoring 'theme' days where special things are going on and the school raises money for area charities. Gage thinks this is especially cool; however, he is learning that not all cool things to him are cool to others. This area is a big learning curve for him, Mr. Sensitive.
For instance, on wacky day, he wore one of his dad's silly ties. He looked adorable. In fact, he made me dress his 'underneath' clothes to look a lot like daddy looks when he goes to school. Eager and happy to go to school... came home with a sad face. The boy on the bus called his tie 'silly', not 'wacky'. Gage, still as literal as ever, thought he failed the entire mission and was most upset.
Then, another day was to wear a favorite sports' team shirt. Gage only wanted to wear his soccer jersey that was given to him by Jared. Now, Gage has never been a fan of sports (partly because we don't go to many games, and partly because we don't go to many games because it's not what Gage has particular interest for.) but after we went to a soccer tournament, Gage definitely found a true interest for spring. The jersey is black and yellow--exactly like the Steelers and since we live in Steelers country, many of his friends said he was a Steelers fan not a "soccer fan" and that's what he is. (And that's exactly as he said it.)
I think I see how school has created more independence in him. I certainly see a growing like for drawing and coloring... and even for writing. But, as the mom, I also see my toddler boy becoming the school boy. So bittersweet for me.
