Then: Laundry occurred about once every three or four weeks. I planned for it, it started and ended in a day (or evening), and it was usually coupled with relaxing 'me' time with movie rentals and take out.
Now: Laundry occurs about every other day, it is never 'finished' and there are always piles--some clean and unfolded, some clean, folded, and not put away... some dirty... some waiting to be worn again, etc. It is usually coupled with cooking, playing play-d'oh, grading essays, blogging, research, and child management.
It's only taken me four years, but I can say I'm finally used to this and no longer have anxiety over never being able to cross off laundry from the to-do list.
And it is for these reasons that we remember our own mothers as cool, calm, and collected.
